kimberley107 Male Fiddler Crab

wildlife art, broome australia, art print, Peter Strain

kimberley107 is a fine art print of a male fiddler crab from Roebuck Bay near Broome Australia.

The eyes on stalks fold down into slots on the top of the crabs shell for pretection, but can protude way above the mud and sand of the tidal flats and mangrove forest floors to provide...

...and extraordinary line of sight...

for the crab. These eyes have evolved to be their main survival tool.

this particular fiddler crab species generally congregates with a collection of...

...crab burrows in the sand and mud.

There are generally many different colored crabs in the same burrow area where this can be found. There must be many millions of these varied colored crabs on the Kimberley coast.

I have come to think of the distinct areas where groups of these crab dig their burrows as...

...crab nests.

These particular species of fiddler crabs are very timid and you have to stay perfectly still for at least 5 to 10 minutes before they will venture out in your presence. To get close enough to photograph them can take hours of learning and stalking.

This is a wildlife art photograph that also fits into the...

...Fine Art Photography category.

I have this one at home as a canvas print on the living room wall.
