kimberley109 Puffer fish with attitude

kimberley109, fish eye, Line of Sight exhibition, Broome Australia

kimberley109 is a Puffer fish. this little chap was trapped in an inter-tidal pool when the tide went out.

He has this wild eyed look because he has puffed up with water because he sees my camera as a threat - being so close.

One wonders why it is alarmed. Some species of puffer fish...

...are rated as one of the most poisonous vertebrates in the seas.

But you can actually handle these ones in the tidal pools gently without harm to you or them.

I have lost count at the number of times I have shifted a juvenile of these fish to a larger tidal pool.

Many of the juveniles must perish...

...because they can't travel out with the tide. In some of the Kimberley coasts flat bays - the tide can recede more than a kilometer from the high water mark.

There are mostly two tides a day - a long way for a little fish to swim twice a day. But they obviously know how to travel with the tide each way.
